Mike Vernon, a towering figure in the British blues scene, has had a profound influence on the genre as a producer, talent scout, and label founder. Over his illustrious career, Vernon has worked with some of the biggest names in blues and rock, helping to shape the sound of British blues from the 1960s onward. His work with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, particularly producing the seminal album *Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton* in 1966, is often credited with launching the careers of Eric Clapton and later, Fleetwood Mac.
In addition to his role in producing iconic blues records, Mike Vernon founded Blue Horizon Records in the late 1960s, a label that became synonymous with the British blues revival. Through Blue Horizon, Vernon introduced the world to talents like Peter Green and Christine McVie, while also reissuing classic recordings by American blues legends such as Elmore James and Otis Spann. His keen ear and understanding of both American and British blues made him an essential bridge between the two worlds.
